Benefits of GS1 US Partnership for FoodReady Customers:

Why Use GS1 US?

GS1 is the global authority for the unique identification of products and companies, which serve as the building blocks for barcodes. Retailers often name GS1 as their preferred barcode vendor, but many third-party barcode vendors claim they have GS1 barcodes. Although their barcodes may have originated from GS1, they do not carry the benefits of licensing a barcode directly from GS1 US. Only barcodes from GS1 uniquely identify your company as the brand owner of that product.

Retailers often verify the authenticity of your barcodes by checking in the GS1 Database before they allow you to sell on their site. If your company is not listed in the database as the brand owner of that barcode, your account might be suspended, or you might need to relabel your products. Both will cost you time and money.

Get UPC codes directly through our partnership with GS1 US!

FoodReady now offers direct access to GS1 identifiers, including Global Trade Item Numbers (GTIN), which are used in marketplace product listings and to create UPC barcodes to label your products.

Choose a GS1 Company Prefix or single GS1 US GTIN based on your product line growth.

A single GS1 US GTIN is designed to be a starter option for microbusinesses looking to quickly list a few products for sale. A GS1 US GTIN can be licensed for $30 with no annual renewal fee.

A GS1 Company Prefix supports a company’s overall growth strategy, enabling you to get multiple barcodes at a single time, as well as identify locations, mixed cases, create coupons, and create higher levels of packaging like a case or pallet. It’s part of every barcode you create and is the key to uniquely linking your company to your products in the marketplace. Your initial fee is the cost of GS1 US Membership and is based on how many barcodes you need. After that, you’ll pay an annual renewal fee to continue using your prefix and barcodes.

  • A GTIN stands for Global Trade Item Number.
  • A GTIN is a GS1 identification key that is used to identify a trade item which could be a product that you may sell or a service that you may offer in an online listing or in a brick-and-mortar store.
  • GTINs can be used by themselves for an online product listing or then can be encoded into a UPC barcode.
  • A UPC is a Universal Product Code which is predominately scanned in North America at retail point-of-sale or checkout. The data that the UPC barcode uses is called the GTIN-12. It is called GTIN-12 because it is always made up of 12-digits and those 12-digits are unique to each of your products. Since the GTIN-12 is commonly encoded in a UPC-A barcode, the term UPC is sometimes used in place of GTIN-12.
  • Barcodes that contain GTINs from GS1 US provide an authentic way to uniquely identify your products in the supply chain and in e-commerce.
